West Coast Gear, Clutch Transmission & Differential Reman Center

A good rule is to resurface your flywheel every time you have your clutch worked on. Clutch manufacturers may refuse to accept warranty claims if this isn’t done, but this may or may not pertain to your driving habits and needs. All vehicles with a manual transmission come with a mechanical device known as a flywheel. The flywheel serves three purposes.

  • First, it maintains a rotating mass, inertia, that helps the engine rotation and allows a more consistent transmission of torque during running.
  • Second, the flywheel has a ring gear where the starter motor can engage.
  • Lastly, it provides one of the driving friction surfaces for a friction disc.

There will come a time when resurfacing flywheels is needed. It is typically when the clutch is replaced.

You and your mechanic should look for some signs to see if the flywheel needs a resurface job or a complete replacement.

Is there glazing or discoloration?

If so, you may need to resurface the flywheel. Glazing and discoloration are signs of wear and can prevent it from meeting the clutch smoothly.

Are there signs of cracking?

This would be bad because it means the part is unsafe for continued use. Cracked flywheels can actually explode while in use, making this a hazardous situation. Additionally, cracked flywheels also mean that the shift mechanisms could wear out quickly.

Is the part unevenly worn?

“Cupping” is caused by the part’s interior surface being worn down by constant contact with the clutch. Uneven wear indicates another problem, such as a misaligned part or one that has too much “play” between it and the contact point.

Flywheel Resurfacing Benefits

During use, the flywheel is constantly spinning. This can lead to damage from overheating and wear and tear. Resurfacing helps to restore the flywheel’s efficiency.

An efficient flywheel offers several benefits.

  • Provides energy to move your truck forward.
  • It ensures proper working of the orientation system
  • Guarantees rapid delivery of kinetic energy

Resurfacing can prevent costly clutch repairs and ensure safety while your truck is in motion. A cracked flywheel can easily explode if you do not replace it immediately.
